Die SF ist in allen Sendern auf den Rückzug aber dem SCIFI-Channel geht es offensichtlich hervorragend, denn dort laufen momentan die aktuellen Staffeln von Stargate, Stargate:Atlantis und Battlestar Galactica - nicht unbedingt in genau der Reihenfolge - am SCIFI-Friday zu Höchstleistungen auf was die Quoten anbetrifft. Nicht zu vergessen, dass der Sender "Kolchak - The Night Stalker" komplett gekauft hat, alle bisher produzierten Folgen zumindest, und sich offenbar sehr für einen Serenity-Film interessiert.
Das New-York-Magazine fragt sich in der aktuellen Ausgabe warum das so ist. Genauer: Das fragt sich der Autor des Artikels, John Leonard. Und kommt zu einer Schlussfolgerung, die verblüffend einfach ist:

What we forget is that science fiction is meant to be subversive. We consume it outside the classroom of official culture, in the closet, in the woods, on the barricades. It lets us imagine the other and odd; the old, poor, sick, and strange; class differences, racial divisions, and gender confusions. So naturally, sci-fi television thrived first in syndication, where we had to seek it out, and then on its very own cable channel, where we spend whole days watching Godzilla marathons and entire weekends running away from made-for-TV catastrophes (earthquake, avalanche, tidal wave, volcano) or from made-for-TV invasions (spiders, locusts, snakes, and fish). [...] This is niche programming for the paranoid. It puts us back in touch with our inner alien teen—a lost soul with call waiting.

SF also als subversive Kunst, die außerhalb der Gesellschaft und damit außerhalb des normalen TV-Programms konsumiert werden muss, enfaltet ihre Tragweite erst dann, wenn man sich auf die Suche nach ihr begibt - sei es im normalen Programm oder halt in einem Kabel-Programm wie dem SCIFI-Channel. Wenn ihr meint, dass das keinen Sinn macht, dann teilt mir das in den Kommentaren mit - es ist allerdings verblüffend logisch irgendwie...
